Riverside Violent Crimes Attorney
Hate Crimes
A hate crime is when a person uses violence against another person or damages another person's property because of their own personal bias. Hate crimes are motivated by bias against a person's race, gender, sexual preference, religion, association, or disability. In 2005, 7,163 hate crime incidents were reported to law enforcement nationally. Close to 70% of these hate crime incidents stemmed from bias pertaining to race and religion. Hate crimes directly violate the rights of U.S. citizens and are illegal according to federal and state laws.
Hate crimes can manifest in many forms such as physical assault or battery, verbal or written threats, psychological harm, and property damage. In some cases, a hate crime offender may try to break up a political group or ethnic club meeting with physical and verbal assaults.
Laws against hate crimes are very strict. If a person is convicted of a hate crime, they may have to spend time in jail or pay a fine of up to $5,000. In some cases, a judge may order the offender to pay monetary restitution to the victim of the hate crime. Restitution can cover things such as physical or emotional damage, lost wages, property damage, or medical bills.
